Student Data & Privacy at a Glance

A one-page summary for schools and families. Updated October 14, 2026. The full details are in the Student Privacy Policy and the Data Processing Agreement.

Our Student Data Privacy Pledge

What we collect

  • Student name, school student ID, and class period, from the teacher's roster or Google Classroom.
  • Answers, written work and photos of work, scores, and practice time.
  • Optional preferences (interests, read-aloud) and teacher-recorded accommodations.
  • Teacher name, email, and sign-in method.

What we never collect

  • Passwords to student email, location, contacts, or biometric data.
  • Advertising identifiers or tracking for marketing.
  • Accounts created by students under 13 on their own. The school consents under COPPA.

AI and student work

  • AI receives only the problem and the answer needed to give feedback. Names and student IDs are never sent.
  • AI requests run through Vercel AI Gateway to providers that do not train on the content.
  • Teachers can review any AI-graded answer.

Where it is stored

  • Vercel: hosting and private file storage (United States).
  • Neon: encrypted PostgreSQL database (United States).
  • Stripe: payments only. Stripe never receives student data.
  • Encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.

Who can see it

  • The student's own teacher and authorized school administrators.
  • Parents and guardians, through progress updates the teacher sends.
  • No one else, except as required by law.

Keeping and deleting data

  • The school chooses how long work is kept: 180 days, 1 year, 2 years, or until deleted.
  • Teachers can permanently delete any student's data, including photos, at any time.
  • When a school leaves, all its student data is deleted within 60 days.
  • Families can request review, correction, or deletion through their school.

Laws we follow

We act as a "school official" under FERPA, rely on school consent under COPPA, and sign each district's student data privacy agreement, including the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) National Data Privacy Agreement.
